Creative Easter Activities and Egg Hunt Ideas

Every year, I invite some of my kids’ friends for an Easter Hunt in our place. I absolutely love having my friends around and using some creativity to make it fun and memorable for the kids. So here are some of the Easter Egg Hunt ideas and some Creative Easter Activities that I have used in the past years and some that I’m going to do this year.

I’d like to point out that we are not religious, so these are ideas for pagan celebrations.

Easter Egg Hunt ideas

I’ll start with the thing we all love the most, the Easter Egg Hunts.

Our rules for our Easter Egg Hunts

I have some rules for our Easter Egg Hunts.

  1. We don’t offer too many chocolates – Of course, there has to be chocolate. But my kids don’t come out of it with tons of chocolates or sweets.
  2. We try to make it age appropriate – I want it to be fun for all ages and to keep them interested until the end of the activity
  3. We like to gift them something that will stay – Either a big toy at the end, or small little toys along the game. I will be more specific and offer options in this post.

Smaller kids alternative game

When my eldest was 2, I did an egg hunt that was a little bit different from the usual.

We had a good collection of colourful plastic toys (thing MEGA Blocks, wooden blocks, plastic toys, etc) so I had more of an Easter Activity than an Egg Hunt per say. I got a pack of Easter Eggs that contained little puzzles inside, I put everything inside a large box, and let the kid look for the eggs.

There were four puzzles divided by 24 eggs, 6 eggs of each colour. He would find each egg and put it in the righ colour recycled egg carton.

He absolutely loved it and then we spent time together making the puzzles (he was into puzzles at the time).

In case your smaller kid is not into puzzles, I have included extra options below that I have also used with my daughter later on.

Here are some options for this idea.

Easter Egg Hunt Scavenger Hunt

Here’s my personal take on this: I don’t like to do the typical spread them all out and some get 1, whilst others get 30 type of hunt. I find it a bit sad for those who are slower. Sure, some people might say that “it’s life, blah blah blah”, but in life, I prefer to lead with empathy, especially when things are not really that important (like an egg hunt). If I can control it, I will give them something fair. And then I’ll support them when they’re in all those unfair situations that are completely out of my control – which will definitely happen.

On these days, there’s kids of different ages (especially with siblings), or kids that are slower, or more distracted, or so competitive they start to panic or fight. In general, I’m sure that’s not just me, it’s always a good idea to try and prevent tantrums and traumas in situations we can control. I also want this to be an awesome day.

And that’s why I do the egg hunts in the form of treasures hunts by having 1 egg for each child in every location. So, even if one of kids isn’t the one finding any of the locations, at least they know they will have an egg with their name or an egg that’s their colour (which was assigned to each person in the beginning).

In each of those eggs you can put different types of things:

As always, you can source some presents at the local charity shops, which I always recommend. Otherwise, you can find all my suggestions for all different things that can be handy for the holidays on my Amazon Storefront on this link.

Here are my suggestions depending on the age:

  • 2-year-olds – spread them around in more visible locations so that it’s easy for them to find them. If you have several kids that are 1 or 2 years old, either print their face for each egg, or a symbol if they recognise symbols (like types of toys, animals or shapes, for example). To make sure they found them all, you can create the same egg carton idea as above for them to place the ones they find and for them to visually see that they found them all.
  • 3-year-olds – hide them in easy-to-find locations. I like to do it as a Scavenger hunt. They have an egg-shaped paper next to the eggs, with the tip for the next location. An adult reads the next location and the tips are really obvious: “under the table”, “on the sofa”, “on the bed”, “next to the tree”, “inside the blue box” and so on.
  • 4 and 5-year-olds – 4 and 5-year-olds are a lot more insightful and they get simple clues like: “it’s where you sleep”, “it’s where you watch tv” “it’s where you play with sand”, etc.
  • 6-year-olds and older – From 6-year-olds and older, you should get more creative. They will particularly love rhymed riddles or challenging hints (here are some ready made riddles). Another option would be that at each location there’s a challenge, and they only receive the next location after doing that challenge (like doing 5 jumps with one foot or balance an egg on a spoon for a few meters, for example)

For all these options, there’s always 1 plastic egg with something inside (either a toy or chocolate/sweet) for each child at each location.

And then I have a large basket as the last stop with one large chocolate egg each (and if the eggs have no chocolates, little extra chocolates) plus a fun gift (nothing too big).

Easter Activities

I also like to do Easter activities, like Bonnet decorating, egg painting, or general Easter crafts. In the past we have done some bunting and have also taken ideas from Pinterest and tried to replicate them. I also buy some Easter Activity books to entertain the kids and some games to play in the garden on the day of the Egg Hunt.

We’ve also made cookies and cakes with an Easter theme which is always a great idea with kids.

Amazon Lists

To make things easier, I’ve created 4 Lists on my Amazon Storefront for you to see a selection of things we’ve personally used or will want to add to our Easter festivities.
